Our Story

At the end of Summer 2020, BVS Women's Choir Board of Directors felt a need to examine our group’s mission and to draft a vision for the future. We felt it worthwhile to form an exploratory committee for this purpose, consisting of both Board and Choir members. The result of those conversations is a new mission statement and a rebrand of our group.

BVS Women's Choir is now Brooklyn Treble Choir (@BKTreble)

We believe that these three words encompass our intention for inclusivity, and display pride for our home base. We hope that our audience and supporters share our enthusiasm about our new name and mission, which can be read below.

Our Mission

We are a multigenerational treble choir dedicated to excellence in choral singing. Based in Brooklyn, NY, we seek to enrich our members and audiences by performing a varied, vibrant, and timely repertoire, with an emphasis on music by contemporary women and other underrepresented composers. Our music reflects a broad range of human experience, and we are dedicated to building a shared vision of inclusion, community, and justice. We aim to open minds and hearts through our music, and through our presence as a group and as individuals, to make a positive impact on our communities.

We intentionally strive to create a welcoming and safe space for women and gender minorities from all backgrounds and levels of musical knowledge.  Ever open to examining our identity and stretching our own boundaries, we celebrate partnerships with other groups, such as temples, nursing homes, women’s shelters, sports teams, and other arts organizations.

Taking pride in the discipline of rehearsing together, we seek the highest level of musicality. In a spirit of adventure, we sing a variety of pieces, both simple and complex. We derive joy, passion, and playfulness from making music together. In so doing, we create something bigger than our individual selves. While we love to perform, we also love the process that gets us there. We believe in the transformational power of music to create magic, heal trauma, and bridge divides.
