Deserving

  • Old First Reformed Church 729 Carroll Street Brooklyn, NY United States (map)

BK Treble’s “Deserving” program invites us to contemplate various forms of love and to consider what people, things, or concepts are deserving of our praise and devotion.

Featuring music that reminds us that we are capable of giving and receiving love in many ways, the concert includes choral “standards” from the classical realm exploring spiritual love, such as Franz Biebl’s glorious double-choir “Ave Maria” and Felix Mendelssohn’s “Laudate Pueri Dominum," contrasting with modern, pop-style songs celebrating self-love like “Does the World Say?” and “Never One Thing.” Works by Diana Sáez (“Plena”) and Marie-Claire Saindon (“Turlutte acadienne montrealaise”) are rooted in dance and folk traditions from Puerto Rico and the Acadian region of eastern Canada, respectively, and celebrate love of life, home and community.

The program also includes a German lied from the Romantic period, a Renaissance-era Italian madrigal, and a fabulous African-American Spiritual arrangement - all by women composers. Don’t miss this musical celebration that reminds us we are all worthy of love, beauty, and joy.
